How our cost guides work

01

Aggregate

We pull prices from 90+ sources: booking marketplaces, published rate cards, industry surveys, government wage data and real quotes people send us.

02

Cross-check

Every figure is checked across sources, then adjusted for each city's costs, demand and the number of local providers.

03

Publish

Clear low, typical and high ranges with what's included, what costs extra and how to save, re-checked every month.

Never one source

No figure rests on a single website or a single quote. If the sources disagree, we show the range.

Priced for your city

Rent, demand and how many providers work locally change the price. Each city page is priced for that city.

Independent

Providers can buy a featured listing, but nobody can buy or change a published price.

Checked monthly

Prices are re-verified every month. Last checked October 2026.

Music costs: FAQ

How much does it cost to record a song in the USA?

A recording studio with an engineer costs $35–$200 an hour in 2026, and most independent artists pay about $75/hr. A 2–4 hour vocal session usually lands at $150–$600 before mixing. Use the price check at the top of this page for your city.

How much does a DJ cost?

A DJ with their own sound system costs $300–$1,800 for a 4-hour event across the US, and $600 is typical. Weddings cost more because the DJ also runs the timeline and announcements. In New York the typical event is about $1,000.

How much do music lessons cost?

A 60-minute private lesson typically costs $55 for guitar, $60 for drums, $65 for piano and $70 for singing or music production. The full range runs from about $30 to $150 a lesson depending on the teacher and the city.

How much does a music video cost?

A one-day music video from a local videographer costs $500–$4,500, and $2,000 is typical for a shot, edited and color-graded video. An artist photoshoot for press and cover photos is $150–$1,500, typically $450.

How much does a music lawyer charge?

Music lawyers in the US charge $175–$750 an hour, and most artists pay about $350/hr. Many quote a flat fee for common jobs, such as $300–$2,000 to review a standard contract. This is pricing information, not legal advice.

How much does it cost to soundproof a room?

Soundproofing one bedroom-size room costs $3,000–$25,000, and $8,000 is typical. A full room-within-a-room build sits at the top of that range; sealing gaps and adding mass to walls and the door sits at the bottom.

Which US city is the most expensive for music services?

New York tops 15 of our 18 guides, and San Francisco tops the three install guides. Smaller metros are often 40–50% cheaper for the same job. Each city guide shows the local low, typical and high price.

How are your prices calculated?

We combine pricing from 90+ US sources: booking marketplaces, published rate cards, industry surveys and federal wage and census data. City prices are adjusted for local costs and demand, and every figure is reviewed monthly. Read our methodology.

How do I know if a quote is fair?

Open the guide for your service and city and put the price into the quote checker. It tells you if the quote is below, at, or above the local range. A quote far under the range usually means something is missing, so ask what's included.

Should I get more than one quote?

Yes. For anything over a few hundred dollars, get two or three quotes. The same job can vary 30–50% between providers, and comparing like-for-like quotes is the easiest way to save.
