A finished commercial release is normally a stereo master, not a folder containing the original recording tracks. Old centre-cancellation methods can reduce a centred lead vocal by subtracting common information between the left and right channels. They can also remove kick, bass, snare and any centred instrument while leaving stereo vocal doubles and reverb behind. Use them only when the mix happens to cooperate. Define the use
Decide whether the file is for private practice, a cover, a live set, a remix, a video or commercial release. The required cleanliness, format and permissions change with the job.
Choose the best source
Use the cleanest authorised audio available. Prefer a genuine WAV or FLAC. If only compressed audio exists, use the highest-quality original copy rather than a file that has been downloaded, converted and re-encoded repeatedly.

Start with the simplest useful split
If you only need the vocal-free backing, begin with vocals and instrumental. Choose four or six stems when you already know you will rebalance drums, bass, guitar, piano or the remaining instruments.
Preview the difficult section
Check the loudest chorus, stacked backing vocals, long reverb tails and any passage where the singer overlaps bright synths or guitars. A clean intro cannot prove that the entire result is clean.

A deeper split is not automatically better. Every extra source is another estimation problem. Start with two stems, judge the actual instrumental, and move to four or six only when the additional control solves a problem you can name.
Modern systems can estimate more detailed source groups than the classic four-stem setup. Research such as Hybrid Transformer Demucs shows how time- and frequency-domain modelling can improve music separation, but every real-world output still depends on the recording, mix density, effects and source quality.
The separator cannot restore information that never reached it.
Lossy encoding removes audio information to reduce file size. Converting that MP3 to WAV changes the container; it does not rebuild the discarded detail. Repeated downloads and re-encodes can make separation harder by adding pre-echo, swirls and transient damage that resemble musical texture.
Use the direct master or highest-quality legitimate source. Avoid recordings captured through a phone speaker, clipped audio, aggressive noise reduction and files with unknown processing histories.

A larger file is not necessarily better. A low-quality source saved inside a WAV container is still a low-quality source.

Use automation and short edits.
One exposed phrase may need a gain dip, a clean replacement from another section or a narrow repair. Local edits protect the rest of the arrangement.
Overprocessing the entire song.
Heavy gating, broad EQ cuts and global spectral reduction can damage every cymbal, guitar and synth to hide a residue that lasts two seconds.
Build one reliable master, then make delivery copies.
If the first instrumental is clean, you may not need a DAW. For deeper work, import every stem at the exact same start point. Keep them at unity gain first and confirm that the reconstructed mix stays aligned. Then mute the vocal and make deliberate adjustments to the remaining stems.
Leave enough headroom for any later processing. Avoid normalising every stem separately before reconstruction because that changes the balance the original mix created. If you need a final loudness pass, apply it to the completed instrumental after the musical balance is approved.
