How to mix a song in 12 steps

There is no compulsory plugin order, but a repeatable workflow stops you from fixing problems that could have been solved with a fader.

01 / PREPARE

Organise the session before mixing

Rename tracks, remove obviously unused material, group related instruments and route sensible groups to buses. Put drums together, vocals together, instruments together and effects returns somewhere you can find them.

Check edits, fades and obvious recording problems now. Mixing becomes unnecessarily difficult when clicks, badly cut vocal takes or accidental duplicate clips remain hidden inside the session.

Make sure individual channels and buses are not clipping. You do not need to chase a mythical universal gain-staging number. You simply need enough working margin to process and combine tracks without unintended overload.

02 / BALANCE

Build the static mix with faders first

Before reaching for EQ or compression, play one of the densest sections of the song and balance the important elements using volume alone.

Compression reduces level differences according to the threshold, ratio, attack, release and other controls of the processor. In a mix it can stabilise vocals, shape drums, control bass movement or make a group of sounds behave more cohesively.

Listen for the result rather than chasing a specific amount of gain reduction. A compressor should solve a musical problem. If bypassing it makes no meaningful difference—or improves the track—remove it.

Attack and release matter because they change how the compressor interacts with transients and musical movement. Slower attack settings can preserve more of an initial transient; faster settings can restrain it more aggressively. The correct choice depends on the source.

08 / BUSES

Use buses to control groups

Routing related channels to buses makes large sessions easier to manage. Drum tracks can feed a drum bus, background vocals can feed a vocal bus and several instruments can feed a music bus.

Group processing can then shape the collection as one unit. Small EQ changes, saturation or compression can sometimes create cohesion, but a bus does not automatically need processing simply because it exists.
