About This Event

TONY FLETCHER - POW! WHEN UK PUNK WENT POP 1980-84 takes place at Walthamstow Trades Hall in London on 8 September 2026 at 7:00 PM. Presented by Rock 'n' Roll Book Club, the event features Tony Fletcher in conversation with Alastair McKay.

The discussion is built around POW!, Fletcher’s memoir about the years 1980 to 1984, when British rock shifted from the disruption of bands like the Clash and Sex Pistols toward more chart-friendly acts and genres. Fletcher draws on his own experience from that period, including working with the Jam’s Paul Weller, attending key concerts, meeting major acts, and interviewing Paul McCartney.

Before writing eleven books, including biographies of Keith Moon, R.E.M. and the Smiths, Fletcher had already worked as a teenage music magazine publisher, record label founder, band leader, concert promoter, and on-air TV interviewer. POW! follows his early career and coming-of-age story, including his attempts to get his own band a record deal.

Venue: Walthamstow Trades Hall, 61-63 Tower Hamlets Road, London, E17 4RQ
