Renowned for his masterful rhythm and rhyme, Tippa’s illustrious career began in the early 1980s as part of Brixton’s Saxon Sound System—a groundbreaking collective that transformed the UK reggae scene and introduced the fast-chat MC style to a global audience. Saxon Sound was more than just a sound system; it was a cultural landmark that nurtured some of the most influential British MCs and singers of a generation. Tippa Irie’s sharp delivery and unmistakable vocal style quickly made him a shining star in this movement.
In 1986, his single “Hello Darling” became a UK Top 30 hit, marking a significant breakthrough for British-born reggae artists on the mainstream charts.
