About This Event
The Strand International Piano Series 2025/6 - The Rachmaninoff Preludes takes place at St Mary Le Strand, The Strand, London, Westminster, WC2R 1ES, on 28 May 2026 at 8:00 PM. The candlelit setting of St Mary le Strand, a Baroque church known as “the Jewel of the Strand,” provides the setting for this piano recital in Westminster, London.
This fourth year of The Strand International Piano Series continues after its launch season in 2022–23. The programme is built around Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 24 Preludes, written across different periods of his life and spanning every major and minor key. The source also notes that the works move from dramatic passages and virtuosic writing to lyric and introspective sections.
The performance features Simon Watterton (piano). The programme includes:
- Rachmaninoff - Prelude in C Sharp Minor op.3 no.2
- Rachmaninoff - Prelude in B minor op.32 no.10
- Rachmaninoff - Prelude in G Sharp Minor op.32 no.12
- Mendelssohn - Rondo Capriccioso op.14
- Beethoven - Sonata in C Minor op 13 Pathetique
Simon Watterton is a Wirral-born pianist who has given solo and chamber recitals in the UK, Republic of Ireland, China, Canada, the USA, Sweden, and Italy. He has appeared at Wigmore Hall, St John’s, Smith Square, and the Purcell Room, and has also performed live on Radio 3’s InTune and for Classic FM.
