The Moss is a Utah-via-Hawaii alternative rock group that formed on the shores of Oahu in 2015. The band began with Tyke James on vocals and guitar and Addison Sharp on guitar, who originally played gigs for diners at local taco trucks between surf sessions. Their early sound was shaped by reggae culture as well as indie acts such as Pinegrove and Cage the Elephant.
By 2018, the lineup expanded with Willie Fowler on drums and Addison’s brother Brierton on bass, and the band moved from Hawaii to the Great Salt Lake area. They performed at venues including Kilby Court and released their self-released debut, Bryology, in 2019. The album was recorded with a DIY approach, using purchased microphones and an interface while James learned how to mix during the process.
