About This Event
The Abyssinians & Big Youth in Berlin takes place on May 26, 2026 at 7:30 PM at Lido, Cuvrystraße 7, 10997 Berlin.
The Abyssinians are known as one of the most important and spiritually minded roots reggae groups to come out of Jamaica. Founded in the late 1960s by Bernard Collins and Donald Manning, with Linford Manning later joining, the group became known for its harmonies, Rastafarian themes, and melodic roots reggae sound. Their breakthrough song Satta Massagana became an unofficial reggae anthem and takes its title from the Amharic language, meaning “give thanks and praise.”
Big Youth is also part of the evening’s lineup. He is recognized as one of the most influential Jamaican reggae artists of the 1970s and a pioneer of toasting, the spoken style over dub versions that helped shape modern dancehall and hip-hop. His 1975 album Dread Locks Dread is regarded as a landmark release in roots reggae and toaster style.
