About This Event
Come for the history—stay for the Joy. Let’s honor Mama Joy the way she lived—boldly, joyfully, and in community. Join us for “Sounds of Resistance and Joy,” the annual celebration dedicated to the life, legacy, and enduring impact of Mama Joy Chatel.
This special event takes place at Abolitionist Place, located at 404 Albee Square Brooklyn, NY 11201, on Saturday, July 26, from 2 to 7 pm EDT. It’s a free gathering for all who believe in the power of community, history, and joyful resistance.
Mama Joy was a beloved community activist, preservationist, and the late owner of 227 Abolitionist Place. A powerful voice for justice, she dedicated her life to protecting and elevating the legacy of the Underground Railroad and Brooklyn’s vibrant 19th-century Black community. Her courageous efforts to save her historic home uncovered a vital chapter of American history—one of resistance, resilience, and Black excellence.
In 2008, Mama Joy founded Friends of Abolitionist Place to ensure this important legacy would never be forgotten. Since her passing in 2014, the organization continues her mission, celebrating the contributions of those who came before and those still fighting for justice today.
This year, in partnership with Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, we are honoring Mama Joy’s birthday with two days of vibrant music, dance, community, and celebration. Bring your friends and family to enjoy an afternoon filled with good vibes, performances, historical reflection, and plenty of dancing.
- Music by the legendary DJ Bentrock of WBLS on Saturday, July 26
- Followed by DJ Spinna, world-renowned DJ and producer, on Sunday, July 27, at Lefferts Historic House
