About This Event
Rinaldo is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 7:30 PM at Ganz Hall at Roosevelt University, 425 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60605. Chicago Summer Opera is listed as the organizer.
Set during the First Crusade in the 11th century, the story follows the Christian knight Rinaldo as he serves under Goffredo during the siege of Jerusalem. Goffredo promises that if the Christian forces capture the city, Rinaldo may marry Almirena, Goffredo’s daughter and Rinaldo’s love.
The plot follows the conflict between the Christian army and Argante, king of Jerusalem, whose ally Armida is a sorceress and Queen of Damascus. Armida abducts Almirena, and Rinaldo later seeks magical help of his own before falling into Armida’s trap and leaving Goffredo’s army. As the story develops, shifting affections and rivalries shape the struggle, while Goffredo and Eustazio lead the army in an effort to rescue Rinaldo and Almirena and overcome Armida’s monsters and enchantments.
Handel’s Rinaldo was his first Italian opera written for the London stage, and the work is noted for its blend of Italian, French, and English musical styles.
