About This Event

PORGY AND BESS at Piano Smithfield in London is a new jazz suite from Chris Coull featuring award-winning vocalist Imogen Ryall. The performance draws on the music of George Gershwin and tells the story of 1930s Charleston, following Porgy and Bess through a mix of well-known songs, lesser-heard pieces, and material from the original 1935 score.

The set includes Ain’t Necessarily So, I Love You Porgy, and Summertime, along with I’ve Got Plenty Of Nothing, There’s a Boat Leaving Soon For New York, Buzzard Song, Prayer, and Strawberry Woman. The work is described as a narrated concert shaped by post-bop jazz influences, hard bop grooves, ballads, Latin grooves, and orchestrally inspired harmonies.

Chris Coull is joined by John Turville on piano, Simon Thorpe on double bass, and Matt Fishwick on drums. Doors open at 7pm, and the show runs from 8pm to 10pm on Thursday, 25 June 2026 at Piano Smithfield, 14 Long Lane, London, EC1A 9PN.
