About This Event
Once In A Lifetime - Post-punk and the subculture 1979-84 takes place at The George & Dragon, 155 High Street, London, E11 2RL, on Friday 4 September 2026 at 7:00 PM. The event is part of the Wanstead Fringe community arts festival and is hosted by Rory Natkiel (Rule Six).
Justin Robertson and Andy Crysell will explore the period between 1978 and 1984, when post-punk, new wave, ska, electro, hip hop, techno, and proto-house emerged alongside one another through early independent music distribution networks. The discussion looks at why this era remains influential and difficult to define, and includes questions about punk’s ethos, the connection between Gang of Four and the Bronx, Siouxsie and Sheffield, and ESG and Factory Records.
The conversation begins at 7:30 PM. At 9:00 PM, Justin and Rory take over the decks for music from the era and beyond, including Talking Heads, The Cure, The Beat, New Order, ESG, LCD Soundsystem, Yard Act, !!!, Parquet Courts, and Soulwax.
