About This Event

Musica Antica Rotherhithe: La Decima Musa or The Tenth Muse presents music from the Golden Age of Venetian opera, 1650 to 1660, at St Cecilia’s Hall: Concert Room & Music Museum, The University of Edinburgh, on 31 August 2026 at 4:00 pm.

The programme features cantatas and extracts from operas written for Venice’s public theatres in the mid-seventeenth century, including works that have remained unperformed for over 350 years. The performance is informed by surviving payment records from Venetian theatres.

Mezzo Camilla Seale and countertenor Tristram Cooke are joined by an ensemble modelled on a Venetian theatre band, with two violins, bass viol, two theorbos, harpsichord and a pentagonal virginal.
