Martin Stephenson began his career as a busker at the age of 15, later playing guitar in several bands in the North East of England for three years before developing his own songwriting approach. His style drew on Spanish guitar, jazz, blues, country, skiffle, reggae, and other influences, and that mix became a trademark of his career, which has spanned almost 40 years.
He formed The Daintees, who were signed by Kitchenware around the same time as Prefab Sprout and Hurrah! The band released four critically acclaimed albums between 1986 and 1992: Boat To Bolivia, Gladsome Humour and Blue, Salutation Road, and The Boys Heart.
Live performances by Martin Stephenson are described as combining intimacy, playful humour, and warm self-deprecation.
