Maajela is a project influenced by Hindustani, Sufi, Afrobeat, and Anatolian rock. The group combines these sounds with contemporary, layered writing, drawing on the different melodies, traditions, and rhythms of those genres. Their music has also been performed at WOMADelaide, New Found Sound, and in support of Allah-Las.
Immy Owusu and Sensible J join the bill with a stripped-back Afro-rock duo set shaped by 70s African music and Zamrock influences. Their EP Spiritual War was created in J’s House Of Beige studio and features fuzzy guitar, balafon, percussion, and drums. Malaika Mfalme also appears, bringing music rooted in soul and folk. A Tanzanian/Australian singer, songwriter, guitarist, and event producer, Malaika’s songs explore Black love, self-acceptance, grief, kindness, reflection, and emotional honesty.
