About This Event
Live Jazz at the VJC with New Harlem Jazz Band - The Red Record Reunion takes place at Clayton RSL in Clayton, VIC, on Saturday, 23 May 2026 at 8:00 pm. Presented by the Victorian Jazz Club, the evening features the New Harlem Jazz band created by Ian Smith for the Red Record in 1972.
The band is returning for a second night and will perform danceable jazz, as the record was originally advertised as dance music. The group was described as one of the most popular bands of its era in the 1970s and 1980s, and this performance brings that original lineup back together in one place.
The band includes Ian Smith on cornet, Pat Miller on reeds, Ian Fleming on clarinet, Richard Opat on drums, Mark Zeraffa on tuba, Chris Farley on banjo, Doug Rawson on piano, and Chris Ludowyk on trombone.
Venue: Clayton RSL, 171 Carinish Road, Clayton, VIC 3168
