About This Event
Join us for the book launch of Electro Rap: Science Fiction, Fantasy and Reality in the Circuitry of Hip Hop on April 21, 2026, at 6:00 PM in the Levinsky Room, Floor 3, Roland Levinsky Building, University of Plymouth. This event is organized by Dr. Adam de Paor-Evans, who will discuss his latest work, which critically examines the electro rap era from 1983 to 1987.
Dr. de Paor-Evans will explore the connections between science, speculative fiction, and urban realities, as well as the futuristic themes present in both well-known and lesser-known electro rap recordings. This presentation offers a unique perspective on the often-overlooked values of electro rap and its relationship with contemporary hip hop.
Dr. Adam de Paor-Evans is a Fellow at the University of Plymouth and has previously served as Reader in Ethnomusicology and Spatio-material Culture at UCLan. He has published extensively on the intersections of spatio-material theory, architectonics, and ethnomusicology. His previous book, Provincial Headz: British Hip Hop and Critical Regionalism (2020), was nominated for the IASPM Book Prize in 2021. He also leads the research lab Rhythm Obscura, which focuses on revealing hidden histories through various forms of ethnomusicological practice.
Dr. Sana Murrani, Associate Professor in Spatial Practice and author of Rupturing Architecture, will introduce the event. Her research interests include spatial justice and the creative exploration of built and imagined geographies related to war, violence, and displacement.
This event is a must-attend for those interested in hip hop scholarship, music, and the intricate ties between genres and cultural contexts.
