Call For Papers | CHIME 2026: Ecological Dimensions of Chinese Music is the 29th CHIME Conference, with a deadline extension to 14 March 2026 for submitting a title and abstract. The conference is hosted by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney and sponsored by the China Studies Centre.
CHIME, founded in Europe in 1990, is a worldwide platform for scholars and students of Chinese music. This in-person conference explores the connections between Chinese music, environment and ecology across contemporary and historical eras, with papers invited on topics including biocultural and environmental knowledge, the impact of environment on Chinese musical practice, local ecologies, ritual and sacred performances, philosophical ideas of nature, environmental education, and Chinese music in relation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Presentation formats include individual papers of 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for Q&A, 90-minute panel presentations with Q&A, and 90-minute alternative formats such as roundtables, performance-based presentations, and films. Enquiries can be sent to yanping.zhang@sydney.edu.au.
