About This Event
Big Summer Carnival takes place at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead on 27 August 2026, with two bookable sessions running from 10:30 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 14:30. Tickets are £7 per child and £2 for accompanying adults, and booking is essential.
The event includes hands-on making activities, where children can dress up in bright colours, add handmade accessories, and take part in carnival-inspired creative workshops. One activity invites families to make a flower headdress and parade-ready prop with artist Yves Ngoo, whose work includes costumes for dance, theatre and film. Polly Ord Painting will also be creating carnival-inspired designs such as rainbow bursts, floral flourishes and feathered plumes.
Another workshop, Rhythm from Rubbish, is led by Hannabiell & Yilis from Ladies of Midnight Blue. Participants can bring something from recycling or borrow a found-sound creation and use bottles, tins, tubes, buckets and other objects to explore simple beats, rhythm games and group percussion. The event also includes a carnival parade from Level 1 to Baltic’s Ground Floor, and no musical experience is needed. Please note that refunds are not available.
