Beyond The Traditional Path: Building a Career Through Action

Beyond The Traditional Path: Building a Career Through Action is a one-day workshop for singers at National Opera Studio, 2 Chapel Yard, London, SW18 4HZ, on 6 November 2026 at 10:00 am. It is designed for emerging classical singers who want to think seriously about building a sustainable, self-directed career.

The morning session looks at the current landscape for classical performance, including the supply-demand mismatch, the limits of the traditional path, and the habit of waiting to be chosen. Participants then work through the five principles of effectuation developed by Saras Sarasvathy, using their own skills, repertoire, networks, and interests as the starting point for career development.

In the afternoon, the workshop moves into small-group work. Participants design a non-traditional career path using only the assets they already have. Examples given include a community residency, a cross-disciplinary collaboration, or a niche teaching studio. The project must be collaboratively structured, built on existing skills, and launchable within 30 days.

The session ends with each participant drafting a seven-day action plan and identifying a permission they have been waiting for that they do not actually need. Twenty places are available.
