Aliah Sheffield was born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in Savannah, Georgia. She trained on clarinet and saxophone before switching to piano in her senior year of high school, when she also began writing songs. Her mother introduced her to Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway, and Aretha Franklin, artists who influenced her approach to writing about more than love and personal relationships.
After leaving Berklee College of Music in Boston, Sheffield settled in New Jersey and began gigging around the Tri-State Area. She later worked a range of jobs, relaunched the historic Philly soul/R&B label Sound Gems with her 2014 single “Where I’m At (Is in Love with You),” and built an online audience during the pandemic by posting original songs inspired by everyday life. Her song “Earth Is Ghetto” later gained viral attention and led to a move to Atlanta, where she learned production and released Since You’ve Been Around with Soul’d Out in 2021. She signed with Def Jam the following summer and released her debut EP, THESE SONGS ARE FOR ANYONE SICK OF EARTH, featuring “Boo Boo The Fool” and “Some Of Your People.”
